Senior Research Fellow (Postdoc)
for the Max Planck Research Group MAGGI: “The Multiplication of Authorities in Global Governance Institutions” headed by PD Dr. Janne Mende


The newly founded Max PlanckResearch Group commences in January 2021 in Heidelberg. It focuses on the authority of state, intergovernmental and non-state actors in international institutions: Which actors (states, companies, NGOs, IO organs, national human rights institutes, cities, unions etc.) have which form of authority in which forums (UN, EU) - and how can their authority be democratically embedded? Operationalizing authority with the triad of power, legitimacy and reference to public interests, the Research Group will identify different forms of authority along the lines of institutionalization, legalization and participation. These require and enable the concept of authority to be multiplied between and beyond public and private authority, in order to meet the challengesfor democracy on a global level.

The Senior Research Fellowwill conduct individual qualitativeempirical research with a focus on the European Union, contribute to joint projects,events, and the dissemination of research output. The position entails no formal teaching requirements.

Requirements:Master’s degree and a (nearly) completed PhD in political science, international relations, political theory, international law or a related area/experience with publications/outstanding analytical and writing skills/ high motivation for academic work /excellent commandof English (German is an asset) /research experience in at least two of the following areas: (a) European Union, (b) globalgovernance, (c)qualitative research, (d) power and democracy on a global level.

The position starts in January 2021on a full-time basis (39h/week). The initial appointment will be for 2years, with the intention of renewal. The salary and social benefits are determined in accordance with salary group 14 of the German public service pay scheme (TVöD-Bund). The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that forms part of the vibrant international research community at one of Europe’s most renowned public law institutes.
