Call for Abstracts

The intensifying geopolitical competition between major actors such as the US and China has shaken the global economy and keeps on exposing the status quo of the global economic order as unsustainable. The biggest energy shock since the 1970s and the ensuing deepening of the cost-of-living crisis are only the latest episodes in the ongoing transformation of contemporary capitalism. Yet, how these shockwaves have triggered specific processes of economic re-ordering – e.g., among international organisations or in different social and economic regimes – and what kind of politics emerge from them, requires further scrutiny. Against this background, this workshop explores questions related to the politics of economic re-ordering in light of geoeconomic rivalry and conflict, ecological transformations, reindustrialisation strategies, and the digital transformation of the global economy, all of which are reshaping contemporary capitalism.

In addition, this workshop seeks to bring together researchers based in Germany or the Netherlands to further explore collaborative paths between the academic communities in the two neighbouring countries.

Proposed papers should address some of the following themes:

• The politics of industrial policy
• Austerity and welfare state recalibration
• Decarbonisation and green economic policies
• The politics and governance of digital transformations
• The politics of financial and monetary reforms
• The regulation and transformation of trade and global value chains
• Economic re-ordering and the rise of authoritarianism
• The interaction between economics and security in the global economic order

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words to ipoedvpwde by 15 July 2026. We will inform you by mid-September whether your paper has been accepted.

Kindly note that, given the workshop’s limited capacity, only one paper per person may be submitted and presented. Co-authorship on an additional paper is possible. We particularly encourage early-career researchers and scholars from underrepresented groups to apply, and we are seeking funding to support their travel costs. The workshop will be hosted at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University on January 28 and 29.
