The Institute of Political Science (IPW) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) seeks to fill the position of Research/Teaching Assistant (50%) with a future Ph.D. candidate, beginning in September 2019 or by arrangement.

Research Focus:

The Research/Teaching Assistant is expected to develop her/his own research project, broadly addressing questions arising from the “Second Nuclear Age” in international politics or behavioral science as applied to the study of foreign policy decision making. Particularly welcome would be individuals with an interest in exploring the links between behavioral ethics and foreign policy decision making.

Area of Responsibility:

In addition to completing a doctoral dissertation, the successful candidate will support the research, teaching, and consulting activities of the Chair of International Relations (Prof. James W. Davis, Ph.D.). Teaching responsibilities include a tutorial on International Relations Theory as well as assistance for seminars in the fields of International Relations and Foreign Policy.


  • Admissions to the doctoral program requires a University Degree (M.A., Diplom, Magister, or equivalent) in Political Science/International Relations or a related discipline with a minimum grade point average of 5.0 for graduates of Swiss institutions, or 2.0 for German degrees, or the equivalent of respective third countries.
  • General expertise in International Relations Theories and a related field of specialization, such as Security Studies, International Organization, International Political Economy, etc.
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English language skills.
  • Ability to develop your research project and work independently.
